Workshop 1: Software Delivery Lifecycle & Baseline Measurement

Duration: 60 minutes You will leave with: an annotated workflow diagram with baseline timings for each pipeline stage.

📓 Logbook: record today's results in your course logbook as we go.

What we do

You step into the role of a platform engineer at OrbitTasks, a 28-person SaaS startup with a slow (~13-minute) CI pipeline and a flaky test suite. We don't fix anything yet. We measure, together, live in the session.

A note on the number: ~13 minutes is deliberately slow. Even one run is a lot to sit through in a session. That discomfort is the point, and it's the motivation for everything we do in Workshops 3 and 5.

  1. We map the current delivery workflow from commit through deployment.
  2. We run npm run ci on the OrbitTasks codebase and record the wall-clock time per stage, together.
  3. We capture observations about anything slow, redundant, or confusing.

Keep your logbook

Everything we record today lives in your course logbook. This is continuity, not an assignment: we reuse your Workshop 1 baseline numbers in Workshop 6, and everything in Workshop 8. Keep the logbook current and you're set.
